He Number of housing starts in the US increased 10.7% in February, up to 1,521,000 units, according to monthly data published Tuesday by the US Census Bureau. This reading followed the 12.3% decline recorded in January. The number of housing starts exceeded the market estimate, which predicted an increase to 1,425,000 from the previous 1,374,000.
In the same period, construction permits increased 1.9% after falling 0.3% in January. The increase was to 1,518,000 from the previous 1,489,000, improving on the 1,495,000 expected by consensus.
Market reaction
The Dollar Index maintains its upward trend after the publication of the data and rises 0.32% on the day, to 103.92.
