The United States on Wednesday sanctioned six North Koreans, a Russian and an entity it said was responsible for procuring goods for North Korea’s weapons programs.
The move was announced after a series of North Korean missile launches, including two that were launched last week.
The US Treasury Department said the measures are in line with US efforts to stop the advancement of North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs to “stop Pyongyang’s attempts to proliferate related technologies”.
He said there have been at least six North Korean ballistic missile launches since September 2021. All of them violated various UN Security Council resolutions.
In a statement, Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson said North Korea makes “continuous use of foreign representatives” to “illegally acquire” items for the production of these weapons.
He said North Korea’s latest missile launches are “further proof” that the Asian country “continues to advance banned programs despite calls from the international community for diplomacy and denuclearisation”.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country needed a reinforcement in its weapons during a test of a hypersonic missile on Tuesday (11), North Korean state media said.
The second test of a “hypersonic missile” in less than a week has revived Kim’s New Year’s pledge to bolster the military with cutting-edge technology at a time when talks with South Korea and the United States have stalled.
