US: Initial jobless claims fall to 204,000, lowest level since September

  • Initial claims for jobless benefits fall to 204,000.
  • Continued orders drop to 1,694,000.
  • The dollar continues to strengthen, after the data from ADP; Friday NFP.

The United States Department of Labor reported that Initial jobless claims dropped to 204,000 in the week ending Dec. 31below 225,000 of the market consensus, thus reaching the lowest level since September.

The continued orders unemployment benefits fell from 1,718,000 to 1,694,000, in the week ending December 24. The data was better than the 1,708,000 expected.

Prior to this report, there was an increase of 235,000 jobs in the private sector during December, according to the ADP report. Later it will be the turn of the final report of PMI S&P Global of the services sector. On Friday it will be the turn of the official employment report with non-farm payrolls (consensus: +200,000) and the unemployment rate (3.7%).

The dollar in the market rose after the ADP report and remained after the figures for unemployment benefits, which was published together with the trade balance data for November.
