US: Initial jobless claims fall to 217,000, below 220,000 expected

  • Initial jobless claims fall to 217,000 in the week of October 29
  • Continued orders rise by 47,000 in the week of October 22, to the highest since April.
  • The dollar remains firm in the market.

The United States Department of Labor reported that initial claims for unemployment benefits they fell by 1,000 in the week ending October 29 to October 29 to 217,000. The data was better than the 220,000 market consensus.

The continued orders of unemployment benefits increased by 47,000 in the week ended October 22 to 1,485,000. This implied the third consecutive weekly rise and the highest figure since April of this year.

The dollar rose slightly after the data and remained in positive territory for some of the market, supported by the rise in Treasury bond yields after the Federal Reserve meeting. Service sector indicators (ISM and final S&P Global PMI reading) will be released later on Thursday. On Friday, the employment report for October will be published, which includes the non-farm payrolls and the unemployment rate.
