According to the latest estimates by US intelligence and military experts, 500 Russian soldiers are killed or wounded every day in Ukraine, the New York Times writes in an article citing anonymous sources.
“Two US officials said this estimate of Russian casualties included about 20,000 dead. Of that number, 5,000 are believed to be mercenaries from the Wagner Group, a private company with ties to Mr Putin, and foreign fighters, said one of the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to discuss sensitive military considerations.
The paper estimates that “the shockingly high rate of Russian casualties in Ukraine means that President Vladimir Putin may not be able to achieve one of his key war goals: capturing the entire eastern region of the country this year, Biden administration officials say and military experts”. At the same time he points out that “with 500 Russian soldiers killed or wounded every day, according to the latest estimate by US intelligence and military officials, Russia’s war effort has slowed to a debilitating drag.”
The New York Times even reports that with such losses, the Russian army is unable to capture Dionbass by the end of the year.
The newspaper’s sources said their evidence is based on satellite photos, intercepted messages and information from social media and local media.
According to the US Department of Defense, Russia has sent almost 85% of its military units to war. Troops have been sent from the Russian Far East as well as military units deployed in various parts of the world.
Because Russia, the newspaper writes citing American and European officials, is suffering heavy losses, the government is trying with all its might to send reservists and recruits to Ukraine.
“In Russia they’ve raised the conscription age and are taking other steps to entice volunteers, said Evelyn Farkas, director of the McCain Institute and senior Pentagon official on Ukraine in the Obama administration. They’re taking people from everywhere.”
Earlier the website The Insider and researchers from the website Bellingcat reported in their article the complaints expressed by relatives of Russians fighting in Ukraine. In his article it is stated that they are forced to participate in the war, and their draftees are forced to sign a contract, without providing the soldiers with pay or medical care.
Last week the Mediazona website, citing the testimonies of prisoners, wrote that the alleged head of the private military company Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, personally visited some prisons, recruiting prisoners to fight in Ukraine. The prisoners were promised their freedom if they accepted his proposal and returned alive from Ukraine.
Neither Russia nor Ukraine report their losses in the war. The last time the Russian Ministry of Defense took stock of the war dead was on March 25. At the time, the Ministry of Defense announced that 1,351 Russians were killed and 3,825 wounded.
The Mediazona website, which in cooperation with the volunteer administration collects data on Russian soldiers killed during the war in Ukraine, wrote that by July 9, 5,185 Russian soldiers had been killed, whose names were identified by open sources .
