US is comfortable with banning Russian oil, says expert

US President Joe Biden announced a ban on Russian oil, natural gas and coal in the country on Tuesday (8). The US, however, has “a certain degree of comfort” in making this ban, as it is self-sufficient in both gas and oil, according to Adriano Pires, director of the Brazilian Infrastructure Center.

Imports from Russia represent a small slice of the US energy universe – around 8% in 2021, of which only around 3% was crude oil – something that is not the case for European countries, which are much more dependent on Russian exports.

Even so, Pires, in an interview with CNN this Tuesday, analyzed that the price of a barrel of oil may continue to rise. Russia has warned that the figure could reach $300 if the West imposed sanctions on the product.

“This number [US$ 300] it’s a guess, because Russia also depends on the sale of oil, it has to sell. She is interested in continuing to sell”, pondered Pires.

On the possibility of loosening sanctions against Venezuela and Iran would not be very effective, as these two countries together would not be able to supply the amount of barrels exported by Russia.

Finally, the director stated that a measure to mitigate the impacts in Brazil would be to resume subsidy aid.
