Alexandra Cotei, a former British national, a member of one of his group, has pleaded guilty to kidnapping and beheading Western hostages. Islamic State in Syria, nicknamed “The Beatles”.
Cotey, born in London and 37 years old, pleaded guilty to killing American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff in 2014, as well as humanitarian workers Keila Miller and Peter Kasing.
Kotei and El Safi el Sheikh, 33, also a member ofBeatlesHave been charged with abducting people leading to their deaths, conspiracy to commit murder against American citizens abroad and conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists.
According to prosecutors, both men are likely to be sentenced to life without having the right to request their release.
Judge TS Ellis said he would announce his decision on March 4, 2022.
Kotey’s agreement with the USA and his enlistment in the IC
According to APE-MPE, Kotei has made an agreement with the American government to give it – as well as to any government that requests it – as much information as it has about its actions in Syria. The agreement also stipulates that, after serving 15 years of his sentence in the US, he will be extradited to Britain where he will be tried again for kidnapping and hostage-taking.
The former London-based sports shop clerk, who was radicalized, addressed the court in English.
He said he went to Syria to fight against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and then joined the kidnapped Islamic State group holding non-Muslim hostages.
Alexandra Kotei and El Safi el Sheikh were arrested in January 2018 by Syrian Kurdish forces and then handed over to US forces in Iraq.
In October 2020, they were transferred to the United States to be held accountable before a US court. Britain did not want to try them in its territory from the beginning, and deprived them of British citizenship. Their extradition to the United States became possible only after the American authorities assured London that they would not ask for the death penalty to be imposed on them.
