Initial jobless claims were unchanged at 205,000 seasonally adjusted data for the week ended Dec. 18, the Labor Department said. This month, requests had dropped to a plateau last seen in 1969.
Economists polled by Reuters were forecasting 205,000 requests for the last week. Orders fell from a record 6.149 million registered in April 2020.
A separate Commerce Department report also released on Thursday showed that consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of US economic activity, rose 0.6% last month.
October’s data was revised upwards to show a rise of 1.4% from the 1.3% as previously released. Economists polled by Reuters predicted a 0.6% increase in consumer spending.
