The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week but remained above the level consistent with tightening labor market conditions.
Initial jobless claims rose by 19,000 to 200,000 seasonally adjusted in the week ended April 30, the Labor Department said on Monday.
Economists polled by Reuters had expected 182,000 applications in the last week.
Orders have been below the 200,000 mark since mid-February amid strong demand for labor. Government data this week showed there were a record 11.5 million job openings as of the last day of March.
The imbalance in the labor market is forcing employers to raise wages, contributing to rising inflation.
