During a New York State Appeals Division hearing held in the United States on March 26, Judge Sallie Manzanet-Daniels interrupted the video of an artificial intelligence “lawyer” that simulated a person.
“I don’t like being deceived,” exclaimed the magistrate.
A group of five judges heard different cases that had a limited time of argument.
In calling the first of them, the plaintiff, Jerome Dewald, who is not a lawyer and represented to himself, according to the New York Times newspaper, had previously informed that he prepared his video speech, but, according to the judge, he had not reported about the use of artificial intelligence.
The images of the AI tool, which simulated a man speaking, were displayed during the session, being interrupted shortly thereafter.
“Wait, is this the lawyer of the case?” Said Daniels. “It would have been good to know this when you made the request. You didn’t tell me, sir.”
Dewald then reported that he had generated the video and was not “a real person.”
Then, the magistrate recalled that the plaintiff has been in court and witnessed verbally, and found herself with the judge’s own team and verbally argued for about 30 minutes.
“Are you suffering from any disease that prevents you from talking?” He asked. “Otherwise you will not use this court for your business,” he exclaimed.
After the scolding, Daniels told the author of the process that he should speak himself if he wanted to use the time of the argument and gave him five minutes.
After that, Dewald got up and talked about the case while he was heard by the judges, who did not interrupt him and thanked him, calling another case next.
