A New York judge has rejected a request by a Donald Trump lawyer to overturn a former president’s conviction for obstructing justice and upheld the $ 10,000-a-day fine he will have to pay for ignoring his documents on the business practices of the Trump Organization family company.
Judge Arthur Engoron said he was not satisfied with Trump’s affidavit and said there was no evidence that the former president had thoroughly investigated the documents requested by Attorney General Leticia James.
“I’m surprised he seems to have no documents, everything is in the company,” the judge said.
James claims that her research found evidence that the Trump Organization, which manages hotels, golf courses and other real estate around the world, provided misleading information to banks and tax authorities to secure loans and tax breaks.
Trump denies committing fraud and says the investigation is politically motivated because Leticia James was elected to the Democratic seat.
