The United States has begun conducting strikes against targets in Iraq and Syria, likely marking the beginning of a full-scale offensive against Iranian-backed militias responsible for attacks on U.S. troops in the Middle East, according to two U.S. officials.
The American attacks left several people dead and injured, Syrian state TV reported on Friday night (2), without giving further details.
The action comes in response to a drone attack carried out by Iranian-backed groups against a US military post in Jordan on Sunday (28), which killed three American soldiers and injured more than 40.
Furthermore, the attacks were carried out shortly after President Joe Biden participated in a dignified transfer of the bodies of the fallen soldiers and met with their families.
Officials have signaled that the offensive is likely to be more significant than those previously carried out against Iranian-backed militias in recent weeks, which have mainly focused on weapons storage or training facilities.
