Suozzi said his office is working with two families who have had trouble getting tourist visas, including one who joined him at today’s press conference.
“Going through the pain of having my sister there alone, jumping from country to country in Europe without having a home to stay, without having the support of her family, without having a really stable roof, is really devastating,” said Jenya Semekova, whose sister and brother-in-law fled Ukraine and are in Italy.
During the press conference, Semekova called her sister who was denied a tourist visa: “We are now in Italy, but we think we are going to the next country because it is difficult to rent an apartment in Italy and it is very expensive. So we need to move to another country,” reported Kseniia Isaienko.
Suozzi sent a letter addressed to President Biden on Friday (11), raising the issue of tourist visas. Since then he has been in contact with the administration.
“These are family members trying to help other family members, but since the law is such that you have to show that you have a place to go home, they can’t demonstrate that because they don’t know what will happen to their homes.” .
