According to the Wall Street Journal, US officials are considering discussing a Defense Department proposal this month to close regulatory loopholes that allowed the Chinese chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) to retain access to “critical US technology.”
Informants familiar with the matter say some Commerce officials are trying to block the Defense Department’s proposal.
SMIC was added to the US blacklist last year. This deprives her of access to advanced manufacturing equipment. The reason for the blacklisting was SMIC’s alleged links with the Chinese military. The company itself has denied the accusations.
