Two U.S. lawmakers have demanded an explanation from rental company Airbnb for its operations in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which China accuses of harshly suppressing.
Senator Jeff Merkley and Democrat James McGovern, co-chairs of the Congressional Executive Committee on China, wrote a letter to Airbnb asking questions about its activities in Xinjiang and other issues.
Beijing denies Uyghur repression, but the US government and several human rights groups have accused China of committing “genocide” against the Muslim population.
Airbnb and the Chinese embassy in Washington were not immediately available for comment.
