Nearly 1,000 migrant children separated from their families at the border of USA with the Mexico under the presidency of Donald Trump have not yet been reunited with their parents, despite the efforts of the Joe Biden administration for two years.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, by of these 998 children, only 148 are in the process of being reunited with their relatives.
After taking office in January 2021, Biden issued an executive order establishing a special task force tasked with locating and reuniting families. The Democratic president had even described the separation of children from their parents as a “human tragedy”.
The Trump administration in the spring of 2018 separated thousands of immigrant families, implementing the policy “zero tolerance» against the Immigrants, with which all those who crossed the border illegally were prosecuted. Audit committees and prosecutors found that these separations began even before this policy was officially put into effect.
According to the ministry, the special unit, after thoroughly investigating the “tentatively» records kept by the previous administration, found that 3,924 children, mostly from Central American countries, were separated from their parents at the border. Many were located and reunited with their families before Biden took office, thanks to a legal process that began when the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit to stop the policy.
“The number of new families being identified continues to increase, as many appear by themselves”, the ministry said and relayed by the Athens News Agency. To date, the special unit has reunited 600 families.
