US military aid to Ukraine is accelerating the possibility of a “direct military conflict” between Russia and NATO, a Russian diplomat said on Tuesday.
“The US continues to inject more weapons into Ukraine, facilitating the direct participation of its fighters and advisers in the conflict,” Konstantin Vorontsov, head of the Russian delegation to the United Nations Commission on Disarmament, told the First Committee of the UN General Assembly.
“This not only prolongs the fighting, but also brings the situation closer to a dangerous line of direct military confrontation between Russia and NATO,” he added.
The diplomat’s comments are in response to the US announcement of an additional $625 million in security assistance to Ukraine.
In a statement on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken cited Ukrainian forces effectively using US support to advance their “successful counter-offensive to reclaim their lands illegally seized by Russia”.
