Republican voters in West Virginia elected a supporter of Donald Trump to represent them in the November midterm elections on Tuesday, but the former president saw another of his protégés lose in the party’s primary.
These two conservative states traditionally vote Republicans, and the winners of yesterday’s primaries are more likely to be elected governors in the fall. This will strengthen the support that Trump already enjoys in Congress and in the local governments of the states and which he needs if he wants to run for a second term in the US presidency in 2024.
In Nebraska, Trump openly supported Charles Herbster, a 60-year-old who made a living from raising animals. Herbster has been accused of sexually assaulting eight women, including a local official, but he denies the allegations.
Voters ultimately chose his opponent, Jim Pillen, according to New York Times and CNN estimates after counting 93% of the vote. Pillen, a university and conservative, had the backing of outgoing Nebraska Gov. Pete Rickets, who could not run again after serving two terms.
In West Virginia, Trump backed Alex Mooney, who defeated his rival, David McKinley, who was backed by outgoing Gov. Jim Justice.
Justice had angered the former US president by voting in favor of the infrastructure investment program promoted by Joe Biden and supporting the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021.
“I love West Virginia. Congratulations to Alex Mooney on his GREAT VICTORY !!”, Trump wrote on Truth Social, his new social networking site.
By-elections will be held in a total of 10 US states in May to select the Republican candidate for the midterm elections.
Republicans also closely monitored the performance of Trump’s supporters in Nebraska and West Virginia to form an idea of his true influence in the party.
