US: More police than Trump supporters at the Capitol demonstration

Police officers have greatly figured for the demonstrators currently gathered around the Capitol, at a sympathy event to the accused of the invasion of January 6th in the building, aiming to overthrow the election defeat of former President Donald Trump.

About 100-200 protesters showed up at the rally, with some holding flags of the far-right “Three Percenters” movement. They were far less than the 700 expected by the organizers and the thousands they caused chaos in the Capitol at the beginning of the year.

Hundreds of police patrolled the area around the Capitol where, in anticipation of the rally, a 2.50-meter-high black fence had been erected to prevent those gathered from approaching the building. One hundred members of the National Guard were also put on alert.

As part of an effort by some far-right Trump supporters to rewrite the history of the Capitol attack, and although the events were recorded by cameras, the speakers, one after another, insisted that the hundreds of rioters arrested were “political prisoners.”

Prosecutors and lawmakers say these cases are being handled properly.

“The issue is justice and different treatment,” said Matt Brainard, one of the rally’s organizers.

Although the crowd was small, the spirits were sharpened at intervals, with sporadic verbal confrontations between the participants and the protesters. Police officers on bicycles intervened to stop some of these quarrels.

Other police officers removed a man with a large knife tied to his leg.

Another, Tony Smith, 40, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, said he went to the rally to seek a fair trial for those accused of invading the Capitol. “If we do not honor this, we do not honor America,” said Smith, who held up a poster reading “We want Trump.”

Unlike Jan. 6, when Congress convened to ratify Joe Biden’s victory, the Capitol was almost empty today and most of its members were missing from Washington. No member of Congress took part in the demonstration, but two Republican candidates addressed the crowd.
