About 900,000 American women ages 5 to 11 will receive their first dose of Pfizer vaccine for Covid-19 by the end of the day (US time) since the age group was vaccinated in the country a week ago. .
This is “a good start,” White House pandemic coordinator Jeff Zienz said in a weekly news release today.
He predicted an acceleration in the rate of vaccinations in the coming weeks, as vaccination centers will be gradually supplied with vaccine doses for children.
There are 28 million children between the ages of 5 and 11 living in the United States.
About “700,000 more appointments have already been booked” in pharmacies, Zienz added.
In addition to pharmacies, vaccines may be given by some pediatricians, pediatric hospitals or facilities set up specifically for this new campaign. A total of 20,000 vaccination sites for children have been planned, the US official recalled.
Vaccination of this age group started last week after the approval of the health authorities.
The vaccine is given in two doses, three weeks apart, as in the other age groups. But the dose has been adjusted to 10 micrograms, compared to the 30 micrograms given to larger groups.
“Even if children are more resistant to the virus than adults, they are still at risk,” said Rochelle Wallenski, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the country’s main federal health service.
He recalled that the US still records an average of 73,000 new cases of Covid-19 per day and about 1,000 deaths per day.
