If tensions in Eastern Europe evolve into an armed conflict, the United States should act in support of Ukraine, but not lead the military clash, according to Barbara Motta, professor of International Relations at the Federal University of Sergipe.
“It is possible to talk about US military engagement, but I believe that this engagement will be much more from the point of view of logistical support, of support with troops that will strengthen existing military troops in Ukraine,” he said.
The expert explained that the country presided over by Joe Biden is experiencing a different moment in military matters than it was years ago.
“It seems to me that the American public is quite tired of these military endeavors in foreign territories, in which the American interest in these endeavors is not a clear interest”, he evaluated.
At a news conference this afternoon (14), US Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said he believed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had not yet made a decision about invading Ukrainian territory.
From Ukraine’s point of view, Motta sees the country’s difficulty in placing itself as decisive in the conflict.
“I think the main challenge facing the Ukrainian president today is to present himself as an authoritative interlocutor, a legitimate interlocutor, with which the two countries [EUA e Rússia] they can negotiate, they can dialogue,” he said.
Regarding the US position, the professor highlighted the consequences generated internally and externally by the presidential term of Donald Trump.
“As much as Biden has been trying to rescue this image of the United States as a guarantor of peace, a guarantor of international stability, we know that there was a loss, there was a great deal of wear and tear in the last administration. And I think that wear and tear could not be completely minimized.”
