US: New jobless claims at highest level since November 2021

New claims for unemployment benefits rose in the US last week, according to data released by the US Labor Department.

In particular, new claims for jobless benefits rose by 9,000 to 244,000 in the week ended July 9. This is the highest number recorded since November 2021.

Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had expected new claims to come in at 234,000, down slightly from the previous week’s 235,000.

In contrast, the number of people continuing to receive jobless benefits fell by 41,000 to 1.33 million. The number of ongoing unemployment benefits has now returned to pre-crisis levels.
