The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits for the first time rose last week, slightly beating analysts’ estimates.
Initial claims for jobless benefits rose by 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 260,000 for the week ended July 30, the Labor Department said.
The average estimate of analysts in a Reuters poll had put claims at 259,000.
Claims topped the 230,000 level in early June and climbed to an eight-month high of 261,000 in mid-July. However, they remain below the levels of 270,000 to 300,000 that economists estimate would signal a significant slowdown in the labor market.
