US: North Korea launches ‘strong’ nuclear test

There will be a strong and clear reaction from the US, South Korea and the international community in the event that North Korea proceeds with a new nuclear test, warned US Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, who is visiting Seoul.

“Any nuclear test would be a complete violation of UN Security Council resolutions” and would provoke an “immediate and strong response,” Ms Sherman said. “I believe that not only South Korea, the United States and Japan, but the whole world will react in a strong and clear way,” she told a news conference after talks with South Korean counterpart Cho Hyun-dong. .

“We are prepared” and “we will continue our tripartite talks tomorrow” with South Korea and Japan, he added.

Earlier in the day, South Korea and the United States launched eight ballistic missile launches in response to a series of eight ballistic missile launches by North Korea on Sunday as tensions in the region continued to escalate.

Washington, Seoul and experts have been warning for weeks that Pyongyang could soon launch the seventh nuclear test in its history and the first in five years.

Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), also said that work was underway to expand the facility in Yongbyon.

North Korea is hit by a wave of the new coronavirus pandemic, the first to officially announce it last month, and as of yesterday had announced that 4,198,890 of its estimated 25 million people had “fever”. However, it is not clear how many people have been infected and experts point out that the numbers announced by Pyongyang may not be true. The government of Kim Jong Un has not even responded to offers from Washington and Seoul to send aid, although the World Health Organization estimates that the health crisis is likely to worsen.

South Korea, the United States and others “have offered humanitarian aid, which has not yet been accepted, but we hope” the North Korean leader “will focus on helping his people meet this challenge we have all experienced and return to the table. “instead of taking provocative and destabilizing actions,” Ms. Sherman warned.
