Russia has suffered “several failures” using Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) it acquired from Tehran this month for use in its war in Ukraine, a US administration official said on Monday.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that Washington believed Moscow had received Mohajer-6 and Shahed series aircraft this month. According to him, Russia probably plans to buy hundreds of such UAVs.
“We estimate that Russia intends to use these Iranian UAVs, which can conduct air-to-ground attacks, electronic warfare operations and locate targets on the battlefields of Ukraine,” the source added.
In July, the national security adviser of the US presidency, Jake Sullivan, said that the US was informed that Iran was preparing to make available to Russia several hundred unmanned aerial vehicles.
President Joe Biden’s administration also released satellite photos last month that it said showed Russian officials visited the Kasan airport to be shown Iranian UAVs.
Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, said last month that the Islamic Republic has “cooperation in various fields with Russia, including the defense sector.”
