US officials link Ronin Network hack to North Korean hackers

The US government has linked the North Korean hacker group Lazarus to the recent hack on Ethereum’s Ronin Network sidechain, in which $625 million worth of assets were stolen.

There was no official statement in this regard, however, the US Treasury Department included the address 0x098B716B8Aaf21512996dC57EB0615e2383E2f96 in the sanctions list for North Korea. This address, according to the EtherScan service, “was involved in a bridge breach in the Ronin network.”

Now this wallet holds 147,753.03 ETH (about $440 million). The Ronin Network is primarily used by Sky Mavis to provide transactions for the popular game Axie Infinity. Attackers hacked several Ronin validators at the end of March and were able to withdraw 173,600 ETH and 25.5 million USDC stablecoins.

Following this, Sky Mavis held a $150 million funding round to pay out the funds to users affected by the hack. The company also launched a reward program for finding vulnerabilities in Axie Infinity smart contracts and the Ronin network.
