As jobs open in the USA they fell slightly in September but remain well above pre-pandemic levels as employers continue to struggle to find workers.
Open job openings, a measure of job demand, dropped to 10.4 million on the last day of September, the US Department of Labor said in its monthly Jolts report on Friday from a revised reading for up from 10.6 million in August.
Economists consulted by Reuters predicted 10.3 million vacancies for the period.
Layoffs rose by 164,000 to 4.4 million, a record high.
The US government said last Friday that they were 531,000 jobs created outside the US farm sector in October, the biggest gain in three months, after opening 312 thousand in September. The employment growth was, on average, 582,000 vacancies per month this year.
