A coalition of 44 US attorneys general signed a letter addressed to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The letter talks about why Facebook shouldn’t pursue its plans to develop and launch a version of the Instagram app for kids.
In March, it was first reported that the Facebook team was preparing to launch a standalone Instagram app targeting children under 13. Supposedly, this version was supposed to allow children to use the application in the safest way possible.
The letter recalled Facebook’s failings in protecting data privacy, as well as studies showing that social media can be harmful to children on a physical and psychological level. Children do not have a fully developed understanding of privacy and can easily become the target of intruders. A large percentage of young Instagram users surveyed have encountered cyberbullying on the app.
The Instagram platform for young children is harmful for a variety of reasons. Attorneys general are urging Facebook to scrap plans to launch this new platform.

Currently, children under 13 are not allowed to have an Instagram account unless the profile description explicitly states that the account is managed by a parent or guardian.
