US: Police search for man suspected of punching Louisville mayor

Police in Louisville, Kentucky (USA), are looking for a man suspected of punching city mayor Greg Fischer at an event complex downtown on Saturday (18).

“Earlier this evening, while on Fourth Street Live, Mayor (Greg) Fischer was punched by an individual,” the Louisville Police Department (LMPD) reported on social media. “The mayor is fine.”

Authorities have released several security camera footage showing a man they believe is the suspect in the mayor’s attack. Police did not say what Fischer was doing when he was assaulted.

“LMPD is investigating and will release more information as it becomes available,” police said. Fourth Street Live is hosting events related to the Juneteenth holiday this weekend, according to the venue’s website.

Hours before the incident, Fischer posted on social media his participation in the city’s LGBTQ+ Pride Parade,

THE CNN contacted Louisville Police and the mayor’s office for more information.

Fischer, a Democrat, is serving his third term as mayor of Kentucky’s largest city and cannot run again due to term limits.

Craig Greenberg, the 2022 Democratic mayoral candidate, sent well-wishes to Fischer on Saturday. “Whoever is responsible for this attack needs to turn himself in,” Greenberg said on Twitter. “We cannot resolve our disagreements with violence.”
