The police investigated the alarm, but neither Cavalcante nor other criminals were found. The lieutenant colonel said that the police, at the time of the alarm, were searching an area with tactical teams not far from the location.

Bivens stated that an aircraft equipped with FLIR technology, with cameras that capture heat signals, encountered a heat wave at around 1 am local time (2 am Brasília time).

“Tactical teams began to converge on where the heat source was moving,” he said.

Bad weather and lightning meant the aircraft had to leave the area, Bivens continued.

Tactical teams made the decision to protect that smaller area as best they could and remained in action throughout the storm, he continued.

Additional resources were brought in and operations resumed early Wednesday morning, “and shortly after 8 a.m., tactical teams converged on the area where the heat source was moving very quietly.”

“Cavalcante didn’t realize he was surrounded until this happened,” Bivens said, adding, “That didn’t stop him from trying to escape.”

“He began crawling through the undergrowth, taking his rifle with him,” Bivens continued.

The U.S. Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC), Customs and Border Patrol teams released his dog, who subdued him when members of that team and the Pennsylvania State Police advanced.

“He continued to resist and was forcibly taken into custody,” Bivens said, adding that no one was injured.

He suffered a “small bite” and medical staff at the scene evaluated him.

He was transported to the Pennsylvania State Police Avondale Barracks, Bivens said.
