U.S. population growth accelerated in 2022 from the slowest rate on record, driven by net international migration, rebounding after a slowdown triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic, the U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday. fair (22).
The country’s population grew 0.4% this year to 333.3 million, after nearly stagnating with a 0.1% rise in 2021 when the coronavirus exacerbated a more moderate growth trend in previous years.
The year 2021 was the first time since 1937 that the US population grew by less than 1 million people, reflecting the smallest numerical growth since at least 1900, when the Census began annual population estimates.
Net international migration — the number of people moving in and out of the country — added about 1.01 million people between 2021 and 2022, and was the main driver of growth, the Census said in a statement on Thursday.
This compared with net migration of over 376,000 the previous year, signaling a possible return to pre-pandemic levels.
Florida was the fastest-growing state in 2022, with a population increase of 1.9% to about 22.2 million, Census figures showed.
“While Florida is often among the highest-gaining states, this was the first time since 1957 that Florida was the state with the highest percentage increase in population,” said Kristie Wilder, a demographer for the Census Population Division.
Eighteen states experienced a population decline in 2022, compared to 15 and the District of Columbia (DC) the year before.
California and Illinois saw six-digit declines in resident population. Population decline in both states reflected net migration to other states.
