US presidential election: Biden’s victory in Arizona certified

This is yet another confirmation for Joe Biden. The victory of the Democratic candidate for the White House in the key state of Arizona was certified on Monday, November 30, while Donald Trump has still not officially recognized his defeat. “Today, we signed the certification for the 2020 Arizona election,” tweeted Doug Ducey, the Republican governor of that state who has swung into the Democratic camp for the first time in nearly 25 years.

Joe Biden wins a narrow victory, by 10,457 votes in advance in a state where nearly 3.5 million voters have voted. Head of electoral operations, the Democratic Secretary of State of Arizona, Katie Hobbs, hailed an election “conducted with transparency, precision and fairness (…), despite numerous unfounded allegations which claimed to the contrary”.

Remedies still possible

Arizona also certified the victory of the Democratic candidate for the Senate, Mark Kelly, so that he “can be sworn in as quickly as possible,” said Doug Ducey. The certification of results in Arizona does not necessarily sign the end of recourse to the courts, this state allowing the results to be contested even after they have been validated.

Donald Trump’s campaign team has in fact tried – without success so far – to obstruct the process of certification of results in key states won by Joe Biden with legal remedies. Among these, the last to have not yet validated its results is Wisconsin, whose certification was also expected on Monday.
