US prosecutors investigate possible Ukrainian involvement in 2020 elections

Federal prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into whether and to what extent former and current Ukrainian officials were illegally involved in last year’s US presidential election, especially if used former President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, to spread misleading allegations of corruption against incumbent President Joe Biden, The New York Times reported on Thursday, citing informed sources.

The investigation, which began in the last months of Republican Trump’s presidency, is being handled by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn, according to the newspaper. It is separate from the also criminal investigation into Mr Giuliani’s dealings in Ukraine., always according to the Times.

One of the Ukrainian officials the investigation is focusing on is Andrei Derkats, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, according to the newspaper. The US Department of Justice has previously made statements to Mr Derkats, claiming he has been “an agent of Russia for more than a decade”.

Rudy Giuliani, who according to the Times does not face any charges in the investigation into possible Ukrainian involvement in the November 3 elections, at least to this stage, has repeatedly denied that he had undertaken to represent Ukrainians.

The US federal authorities and a lawyer for Mr Giuliani did not immediately respond to a request for comment by Reuters.

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani’s dealings with Ukrainian oligarchs while working as Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer spark another Manhattan federal prosecutor investigation. Federal agents searched his home and office in April and confiscated cell phones and computers.

Mr Giuliani has denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning his defense have been made more than once.
