The United States on Tuesday placed Russia on lists of countries involved in “policies or patterns” of human trafficking, forced labor, or whose security forces or government-backed armed groups recruit or use underage soldiers. .
The State Department included the ratings in its annual report on human trafficking, which for the first time featured, following a demand by the US Congress in 2019, a section on “state-sponsored trafficking in persons”.
Russia appears several times in the report because of the invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, and for what the document classifies as the vulnerability to human trafficking of millions of Ukrainian refugees who have left the country.
The Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the allegations in the report.
In addition to Russia, the new section lists Afghanistan, Myanmar, Cuba, Iran, North Korea and five other countries with a “documented policy or pattern of human trafficking”, forced labor in government-affiliated sectors, sex slavery in government-owned camps. who employ or recruit children as soldiers.
The report also contains a separate list of 12 countries that employ or recruit child soldiers, including Russia and others.
