President Joe Biden said the United States stands ready to provide assistance to places affected by Hurricane Beryl.
Speaking at an event on extreme weather on Tuesday (2), the Democrat said people and communities hit by Beryl are “in our prayers”.
“The affected people, islands and communities are in our prayers, and we stand ready to provide assistance to them,” he stressed.
The Category 4 storm made landfall on the island of Carriacou, part of Grenada, as it did on Monday. Damage was also reported on the island of Petite Martinique and Barbados.
The National Hurricane Center said the storm is expected to hit southern Jamaica on Wednesday (3).
Climate crisis
Biden stressed that the world needs to address the climate crisis as a cause of more extreme weather, including a more active and extreme hurricane season this year.
Planet-warming pollution is causing global and ocean temperatures and sea levels to rise, which is making the impacts of hurricanes more dangerous.
A warmer climate also means there will be more water vapor in the atmosphere to potentially fall as rain.
“Ignoring climate change is deadly, dangerous and irresponsible,” Biden warned.
“These climate-fueled extreme weather events don’t just affect people’s lives. They also cost money,” he concluded.
