The United States registered 1,083,948 new cases of Covid-19 this Monday (3), according to the monitoring platform of the Johns Hopkins University. The number represents a new record, and is nearly double the 590,000 infections reported on December 26, 2021.
This is the first time that a country has registered more than 1 million cases of the virus in 24 hours and the United States remains isolated in the world ranking of Covid-19 infections, with 56,190,946 since the beginning of the pandemic.
There were also 1,093 new deaths from the disease in the country, far from the record of 4,442 almost a year ago, on January 20, 2021, when the United States was still in the beginning of its vaccination campaign.
To date, more than 500 million doses have been administered across the country and 205 million Americans are fully vaccinated against the virus, representing 63% of the entire population.
President Joe Biden will meet with the White House Committee to Combat Covid-19 this Tuesday (4), and is expected to give a brief speech to the nation on the rapid spread of the Ômicron variant in the United States.
The country again had more than 100,000 inpatients with Covid-19 on Tuesday, surpassing the six-digit mark for the first time in nearly four months. By early November, 45,000 Americans were hospitalized with the disease, and that number has been rising ever since.
Child admissions have nearly tripled since early December and are also worrying US officials.
