FlightAware recorded more than 18,000 domestic and international flights (to or from the USA) delayed or canceled on Thursday and Friday (27).
About a third of Saturday’s flights were delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, and nearly half of flights originating from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston were delayed.
At least 10 tornadoes struck the southeastern US states of Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi on Saturday, leaving one person dead outside Houston, the National Weather Service and local authorities said.
“These numbers will likely increase,” said meteorologist Aaron Gleason of the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.
The death and four other injuries were reported in Brazoria County, about 45 miles south of Houston, according to the county Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say many homes and schools were severely damaged or destroyed. Images on social media show scattered ruins of houses and broken trees and utility poles scattered across streets and lawns.
In the west, strong winds, gusting up to 150 mph in the high elevations of California’s Tahoe Basin and 50 mph at lower elevations, hit the region this weekend, with heavy rain expected from San Francisco. to Portland, Oregon, forecasters said.
Between 100mm and 150mm of rain is expected to fall before New Year’s Eve, forecasters said.
“Damaging winds could down trees and power lines,” the Weather Service warned. “Widespread power outages are possible.”
