US regulator will assess the safety of 580,000 Tesla electric vehicles that have games

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it has launched a formal investigation to assess the safety of 580,000 Tesla electric vehicles sold since 2017. This investigation stems from the automaker’s decision to allow games to be played on a central touchscreen. The regulator included Tesla Model 3, S, X and Y electric vehicles.

The agency suggests that the Passenger Play gaming function “can distract the driver and increase the risk of an accident.” According to NHTSA, the previously mentioned feature “was only activated when the car was parked”, but now you can play while driving.

The agency clarified that the decision to open an investigation was based on reports that “Tesla’s gameplay functionality is visible from the driver’s seat and can be activated while driving.”

The NHTSA statement also said the agency is “committed to ensuring the highest standards of road safety in the country.”

Tesla has not yet commented on the situation.
