The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the US auto safety regulator, has opened an investigation into Tesla’s Model Y SUV after receiving two reports that the steering wheel on the 2023 models had come off while driving.
NHTSA began the investigation into the possible failure on Saturday (4). The agency estimated that there are more than 120,000 2023 Model Y vehicles in the US.
The agency said that in both cases the steering wheels came out suddenly inside cars with low mileage.
None of the cars had a so-called retaining bolt that would secure the steering wheel to the steering column. Instead, the agency said, friction held the flywheels in place.
NHTSA said none of the episodes caused an accident or injuries. The agency did not say when the flywheels came out, but said both were reinstalled.
Tesla did not immediately return a request for comment for the report. The company closed its US Press Relations Department.
