Republicans in Congress have hailed the news of the takeover of Twitter by billionaire Elon Musk, while Democrats have hailed it as a sign that members of Congress should move quickly to contain the big tech companies.
Musk, owner of Tesla and SpaceX, closed the $ 44 billion (€ 40.98 billion) takeover deal yesterday.
Republican MP Jim Jordan, a member of the conservative Freedom Caucus group in the House of Representatives, welcomed the news via a Twitter post, saying: “Freedom of speech is back.”
Jordan and other Republicans have criticized Twitter for banning former President Donald Trump and other key Conservative members from joining the alleged social networking platform. Trump was denied access because of the risk of escalating violence after invading the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
However, Trump said yesterday that he will not return to Twitter even if his account is restored, while he will remain on his own social media platform.
Senator Marsa Blackburn, another Republican, said: “I hope Elon Musk will help control the history of the big tech companies when it comes to censoring users who have a different view.”
However, Democrat Elizabeth Warren, a progressive senator who criticizes technology platforms, called the deal “dangerous to our democracy.”
“Billionaires like Elon Mack are playing with a different set of rules than anyone else, amassing power for personal gain. We need a wealth tax and strong rules to hold big tech companies accountable,” she said in a Twitter post.
Democrat Ro Cana said the deal was a reason for the passage of a bill to protect the personal data of people using the internet.
“We need safeguards that give users more control over their personal data, ensuring impartiality and transparency,” he said in a statement.
Republicans are a minority in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives.
