Consequences for China if it supports Russia
White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki reaffirmed on March 14 that China will face consequences if it helps Russia militarily or fails to comply with sanctions that have been set against the country. According to a senior US government official, the Russians asked the Chinese for military help, including drones.
“I will not outline what specific consequences, but the Security Advisor in the Assembly said that if China provides any kind of military aid or goes against established sanctions there will be consequences. What the consequences will be will be determined in the future.”
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russia has not asked for assistance from China, claiming that the country has enough military power to fulfill all its objectives in Ukraine on time and in full.
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN that the US is “watching closely to see the extent to which China actually provides any form of support, material or economic, to Russia. It’s our concern. And we communicated to Beijing that we will not wait and allow any country to compensate Russia for its losses from economic sanctions.”
In a meeting between Sullivan and the main Yang Jiechi in Rome, also last Monday (14), the possible negative results of aid to the Russians was directly presented, a high official of the government of Joe Biden.
“We have concerns about China’s alignment with Russia at this time, and the national security adviser was straightforward about those concerns and the potential implications and consequences of certain actions,” the official said, describing a “very frank,” “intense” conversation. ”.
