US: Retail sales unchanged in April, disappointing expectations for a 0.4% rise

  • Retail sales in the United States were virtually unchanged in April.
  • The US Dollar Index remains in negative territory below 105.00.

The US Census Bureau reported Wednesday that Retail sales unchanged in April, standing virtually unchanged on a monthly basis at $705.2 billion in April. This reading is below the 0.6% increase recorded in March and misses market expectations of 0.4%.

“Total sales for the period between February 2024 and April 2024 increased 3.0% compared to the same period of the previous year,” the publication said. “Retail sales were virtually unchanged from March 2024, but rose 2.7% above last year. Non-store retailers were up 7.5% from last year, while services “Food and drinking places rose 5.5% compared to April 2023.”

Excluding vehicles, the indicator grew 0.2% after rising 0.9% the previous month, in line with expectations.

Market reaction

The US Dollar remains under downward pressure following disappointing retail sales data. At the time of writing, the US Dollar Index is down 0.37% on the day, settling at 104.65.
