A Russian aircraft approached three US fighter jets in the Mediterranean last weekend, the Pentagon said today amid escalating tensions between the United States and Russia over the accumulation of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine.
Although such incidents are not uncommon between the US and Russia, they have taken place at a particularly sensitive time, and concerns have already been expressed that an accident could occur due to miscalculations.
In three separate episodes, the Russian fighter approached the three P-8A naval patrol aircraft while flying in international airspace in the Mediterranean. “Although no one was injured, such interactions could lead to miscalculations and mistakes with dangerous consequences,” said Pentagon spokesman Capt. Mike Kafka.
A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said in one case the Russian plane approached the U.S. a few feet away.
