The United States today lifted sanctions against Moscow decided at the G7 summit, including measures to ban gold imports from Russia and impose new sanctions on its defense industry, the US Treasury Department announced today.
“The measures taken today (…) are at the heart of Russia’s ability to produce and develop weapons and technologies used in Vladimir Putin’s brutal war of aggression against Ukraine,” the finance ministry said in a statement.
The sanctions target 70 Russian entities, including the military-industrial group Rostec, described by Washington as “the cornerstone” of the Russian defense and technology industry.
“The targeting of the Russian defense industry will undermine Putin’s capabilities and further hinder his war against Ukraine, which is already characterized by weak morale, broken supply chains and logistical weaknesses,” he told the Foreign Ministry.
At their summit in Germany on Sunday, G7 leaders announced a gold embargo recently lifted in Russia.
