The US government is planning to impose sanctions on Russian companies that it says provide goods and services to Moscow’s armed forces and intelligence services, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) yesterday.
The sanctions are expected to be announced by the US Treasury Department next week, according to a report cited by US officials. The US Treasury Department declined to comment on the report.
Most of the companies that are expected to be sanctioned – including Serniya Engineering and Sertal – had earlier been added to a US list banning the export of sensitive technologies to them, according to the WSJ.
Although the companies are blacklisted, the measure does not imply a ban on any business, the article said.
On Thursday, the United States and its allies stepped up pressure on Moscow to invade Ukraine. Washington has imposed new sanctions on dozens of Russian defense companies, hundreds of members of the Russian parliament and the managing director of Russia’s largest bank.
Food worth more than 2 million euros is sent to the besieged cities of Ukraine by Britain
Britain announced today that it would fund a humanitarian aid program for Ukraine involving essential food supplies worth a total of 2 2 million (€ 2.3 million) for cities under siege by Russian troops in response to a request. of the Ukrainian government.
One month after Moscow’s attack on Ukraine, which the Kremlin describes as a “special military operation”, the Russian military has failed to capture any of the Ukrainian cities and has resorted to “pounding” them with artillery and air strikes.
The worst hit is Mariupol, in eastern Ukraine, a city of 400,000 under siege since the early days of the war. Tens of thousands of people are estimated to remain trapped without food, water or heating.
Britain said about 25 trucks of dry food, canned food and water would be sent by road and rail from warehouses in Poland and Slovakia to the most in need of Ukrainian cities.
“Ukraine’s territorial needs are clear, with so many people in besieged areas trapped in basements without food and water,” said Alice Hooper, the British Foreign Office ‘s humanitarian adviser. “We are working with partners at the border to ensure that these vital British supplies reach where they are needed most, as soon as possible,” he added.
