The United States said on Friday (23) that an extension of the ceasefire was desperately needed in Lebanon. The White House also stated that they were “pleased” that the Israeli army had begun to withdraw from the central regions of the country.
Israeli forces will remain in southern Lebanon beyond the 60-day deadline stipulated in a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah because its terms have not been fully implemented, the Israeli prime minister’s office said on Friday.
“All parties share the goal of ensuring that Hezbollah does not have the ability to threaten the Lebanese people or their neighbors. To achieve these goals, a short, temporary extension of the ceasefire is urgently needed,” said Brian Hughes, spokesman for the White House National Security Council.
“We are pleased that the Israeli army has begun the withdrawal from the central regions and we continue to work closely with our regional partners to finalize the extension,” he added.
The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, which came into force on November 27 last year, was intended to halt hostilities between the two sides. Under the agreement, Hezbollah and all other armed groups in Lebanon were to cease any attacks on Israel, while Israel agreed to stop military attacks on Lebanese territory. The agreement also stipulated a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon within 60 days, with the Lebanese army and security forces assuming responsibility for the region.
