The United States announced this Saturday (24) that it will recognize the result of the presidential elections in Brazil, regardless of candidate or political party.
“Our confidence in the Brazilian elections has been clearly reinforced by several high-ranking US government officials and remains unchanged. The eventual U.S. recognition will come to the candidate who wins the presidential election as a result of our determination on the integrity of the TSE-led electoral process, not a negotiation with any candidate or political party,” the U.S. Embassy said.
The demonstration reiterates the confidence of the United States in the Brazilian electoral process. Last Wednesday (21), the charge d’affaires of the US embassy, Douglas Koneff, met with former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
So far, there has been no meeting with President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who is in second place in polls.
According to US government sources, there was still no availability on Bolsonaro’s agenda. Therefore, it is not ruled out that the meeting could take place before the first round of elections is held.
US diplomats from the US Embassy and Consulates in Brazil have regularly met privately with political parties and candidates to learn about the political perceptions of leading candidates.
The Biden administration’s recognition of the winner of the elections is, in the view of Lula’s allies, one of the main international demonstrations regarding the legitimacy of the result.
Since Biden’s victory in the dispute with former President Donald Trump, Bolsonaro has made statements in which he points to fraud in the American electoral process.
In June of this year, for the first bilateral meeting with Biden, the Brazilian president repeated his distrustful speech.
