US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that the US has not seen Russia “really take steps” that suggest the country would use nuclear weapons in the war against Ukraine.
Still, he reiterated that the US government takes President Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats “very seriously.”
“We are looking very carefully to see if Russia is actually doing anything that suggests they are contemplating the use of nuclear weapons. So far, we haven’t seen them take those steps,” Blinken told a State Department press conference with Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly.
“But we also know that Russia is engaged in a horrific brutalization of Ukraine and therefore the threats they make we take very seriously,” he warned.
“As for President Putin’s intention, I’m not going to speculate on what’s on his mind, I can just say that we’ve planned every possible scenario, including this one,” he said.
Regarding the Nord Stream pipeline leaks, Blinken noted that he had “nothing to say” in response to Putin’s “absurd claim” that “Anglo-Saxons” sabotaged the structure.
“Let’s get to the bottom of what happened. We will share this information as soon as we have it, but I do not want to pre-empt the investigation that is ongoing,” the secretary said.
