On Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he was “convinced” that Moscow would try to overthrow the Ukrainian government.
The statement was made during an interview recorded on American television, in which he was asked what Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions are.
“You don’t need intelligence to say that’s exactly what President Putin wants. He made it clear that he would not only like to reconstitute the Soviet Empire, but also to reassert a sphere of influence around neighboring countries that were once part of the Soviet bloc,” said Blinken.
The secretary of state promised that NATO would stand in the way of Putin’s ultimate goals.
“Now, when it comes to a threat beyond Ukraine’s borders, there is something very powerful standing in its way. This is NATO article five, an attack on one is an attack on all,” said the top American diplomat.
