US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will travel to Kyiv tomorrow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today, two months after the start of the Russian invasion.
“Tomorrow, US officials will travel to our country: I will meet with Secretary of Defense (Lloyd Austin) and Anthony Blinken,” Zelensky told a news conference at a subway station in central Kiev.
This is the first official visit of US government officials to Ukraine since February 24.
Asked by Agence France-Presse, a State Department spokesman declined to comment.
Zelensky also expressed the hope that his American counterpart Joe Biden could also “come to support the Ukrainian people” in Kyiv, when the security situation allows it.
He clarified that the talks tomorrow will focus on the delivery of American weapons to Ukraine.
“Last week, the signs, the messages, the steps, the deadlines, the numbers – I’m talking about US weapons, everything improved,” he told reporters, adding that he was “grateful” to the US administration, even if he would like “heavier and more powerful weapons to face the Russian army”.
After all, he said, Ukraine wants the United States to agree to be one of the guarantors of security in order to protect it from future threats.
He told a news conference in Kyiv that he expected the United States to talk to Germany about arms supplies to Ukraine.
